Retirement
The term “Retirement” has been carried forward into the 21st century from a bygone era of jobs that were strenuous and physically demanding. The toll this work took on our parents and grandparents left many eager to retire yet unable to enjoy it fully.
In today’s world there has been a shift from labor-intensive jobs to more service-oriented professions like sales, consulting, marketing, and the like. As a result, a large number of people are transitioning into this new season of life better prepared and often in far better physical shape.
Many Baby Boomers are leaving successful careers and professions wondering, “What’s next?” Imagine taking everything you’ve learned in the first two acts of your life and turning it into an amazing Encore! One that amplifies your impact, brings you satisfaction, and leaves a lasting legacy for those you love and care about.
Your Encore Awaits!
It’s time to step up to the mic!
Are you ready?
Your Encore! is all about leveraging your wisdom and past experiences to create an amazing, unforgettable future full of significance, meaning, and enjoyment. It is a time to cut loose, rediscover your passions, redefine your horizons and leave a lasting legacy.
For many people, work provides four key essentials for life. it provides a purpose, a reason to get up in the morning. It gives structure, a place to go and things to do. Work involves a community, a group of people you connect to, and collaborate with that gives you a sense of belonging and in many cases your identity.
As you transition to this new season of life, things will change. You will be responsible for discovering or reinventing your purpose, structure, community, and often your identity. Here, the opportunities abound to explore new activities, pursue your passions, enjoy and deepen relationships, and make a difference in the world around you.
The Encore! Vision
The Encore! Vision is a generation of people (us Baby Boomers) living on purpose, with purpose, and for a purpose.
Over your life, you have acquired a vast amount of Intellectual, Relational, and Experiential Capital that has gotten you to where you are today. This is your IRE. Along with your skills and talents, your IRE gives you an excellent platform to be a change agent in your family and in the world.
How you used your IRE can have a significant impact on your family, others, and causes you care deeply about. Imagine what the country would look like if half of your fellow Baby Boomers (35 million strong) started spending some of their IRE to equip, educate, train, and care for others. The potential is staggering!
As we spend our IRE and unleash the power of purpose, our generation can make America a better place to live and positively change the future for our kids, our grand-kids, and beyond. And here’s the best part, unlike your IRA, the more IRE you spend on other, the more your IRE grows.
Possibilities Abound!
In planning for retirement, most advisers focus on the finances, which you’ve done. The aim here is to shift your attention from what you’ve done, to what you will do for the next 15-30 years. What will occupy the roughly 120 waking hours of your life each week? What will get you out of bed in the morning after the “retirement honeymoon” is over? The possibilities are endless and you get to choose what’s best for you.
Unfortunately for many, this new season of life is like an uncharted sea of uncertainty and significant change. Identifying the non-financial changes and preparing for them is a critical step that allows you to thrive and not just survive in these uncharted waters.
As with any journey, having a strategy, a well-planned course is key to arriving safely. Understanding where you are and where you want to be are two necessary components for charting a course.
Check out the RESOURCES available to help you ascertain your current location, envision your destination, and create the Encore! of your life to get you there. You can sail it alone or you can enlist an experienced “Skipper” (aka Coach) if that would give you greater confidence and make more sense to you.
My Story
Back in my financial planning days, I used to enjoy telling my business owner clients that there were three ways that they could leave their business. I called them the 3 D’s of Departure; Death, Disability, or Design. The same statement could be made about many corporate careers with the addition of a fourth D representing Downsized or Dismissal. When given a choice, Design always comes out on top!
When I turned 60, I decided it might be prudent for me to take my own advice and start designing my transition. It took me three years to successfully transition my client relationships and corporate responsibilities to my succession team. During those three years, I was blown away by how much I learned about myself and the transition process.
I had spent 30+ years helping people plan their retirements by focusing on the dollars. The formula seemed simple, sufficient financial assets = great retirement. What I discovered was, that as important as finances are, there is much more to the equation. The transition into this new season of life was full of changes and challenges which were new to me. Most of them were non-financial and seemed to come from nowhere and needed to be dealt with.
Did you know that there are about 10,000 baby Boomers turning 65 every day? As I engaged in conversations with my peers about their post-work experiences, I realized many of them were trying to figure this retirement thing out as well. This led me to believe there were Boomers out there like me, who might appreciate some wisdom, insight, and help in making this transition.
